Coronado's Holiday Season Runs on Two Calendars. The First Week of December Is Where They Meet.

Hotel del Coronado built the Laundry in 1919 to serve the resort and the people who lived on the island. For decades its five delivery trucks were a regular sight on Coronado streets, until local service ended in 1973. The steam laundry kept running for the hotel until 2018, which made 99 years in all. When the restoration finished in 2021, the building kept its original brickwork, vaulted ceilings, and the old conveyor system above restored wood floors, and it gained an 1880s-era bar.

This season the Laundry becomes the Del's new Holiday Lodge, open on select dates from Nov. 25 to Jan. 3 with festive lights, pub-style dining, holiday shopping, and kids' crafts. The Del runs one holiday calendar and the island runs another, side by side from Nov. 20 onward. Their marquee free events stack up in a single stretch, from Wednesday, Dec. 2 through Saturday, Dec. 5. Most of planning November and December on Coronado comes down to knowing which calendar a given night belongs to.

The film festival shows the overlap first

The Coronado Island Film Festival opens Wednesday, Nov. 4, and already crosses between resort and village. Coronado Times reports that the 11th festival runs Nov. 4 to 8 with more than 140 films, including award-season contenders, premieres, documentaries, and shorts.

The festival opens at the Del. The Leonard Maltin Industry Tribute Gala on Wednesday, Nov. 4, takes over the Garden and Crown Room with a 5:30 p.m. champagne reception, dinner and awards at 7, and an after-party at 9. The next night the action moves up Orange Avenue. Peter Farrelly's I Play Rocky, about Sylvester Stallone's push to star in the film he wrote, screens at Village Main Theatre on Nov. 5. Doors open at 6 p.m., the film starts at 6:30, and the after-party is at The Tavern.

The rest of the schedule uses spaces residents know well: the Coronado Community Center's Nautilus Room, the Coronado Island Public Library's Winn Room, John D. Spreckels Center, Village Theatre, and Founders Hall C at the Del. A few dates worth marking:

  • Saturday, Nov. 7: the Jury Awards, with $20,000 in cash prizes for filmmakers and screenwriters, plus Avenue of the Stars: Scenes & Sips.
  • HAROLD!: a tribute to silent-film star Harold Lloyd with his granddaughter Suzanne Lloyd, Leonard Maltin, and a fully restored Lloyd film.
  • Sunday, Nov. 8: two closing-night screenings at 7:30 p.m. One is James Gray's Paper Tiger at Village Main Theatre. The other is Mouse at Marriott Coronado Island Resort & Marina, with a waterfront reception from 6 to 7:30.

On the same Sunday morning, the Silver Strand Half Marathon runs along the Strand with the ocean on one side and the bay on the other.

The Del's calendar runs on reservations

"A Holiday Through Time" begins Friday, Nov. 20 and runs through Jan. 3, 2027. It brings back the two-story lobby Christmas tree and adds trees themed to different eras of the hotel's history. According to the Del's announcement, reservations are required for all holiday programming.

That shapes the season. Most of the resort calendar has to be booked ahead:

  • Skating by the Sea, Nov. 20 to Jan. 3: the beachfront rink on Windsor Lawn, $35 to $45, with proceeds going to Make-A-Wish San Diego.
  • Frostbite Lounge, Nov. 20 to Jan. 3: fire pits beside the rink with bites and cocktails. Reservations required.
  • Beachside Igloos and Jingle Roast, Nov. 20 to Dec. 27: private igloos and fire pits on Del Beach, with s'mores.
  • Holiday Movies on the Beach, Nov. 20 to Dec. 31: ticketed outdoor screenings of holiday classics.
  • Victorian Tea and Festive Dining, Nov. 26 to Dec. 25: ticketed meals in the Crown Room and Coronet Rooms, including a Thanksgiving buffet, Victorian Tea, Christmas Eve dinner, and Christmas Day brunch.

One part of the resort season needs no booking at all. The Lightshow Spectacular runs nightly from Nov. 20 to Jan. 3, with a show every 30 minutes from 5 to 9 p.m. and artificial snow drifting through the Norfolk Island Pines. It is free. For anyone who lives a short walk or bike ride away, it is the easiest holiday outing on the island, and it fits into a weeknight evening.

The island's calendar fills in around Thanksgiving

While the Del opens its season on Nov. 20, the town opens with a run. The 13th annual Coronado Turkey Trot on Thursday, Nov. 26, is a flat 5K walk, run, or trot with views of San Diego Bay. It benefits research and treatment at Rady Children's Hospital and is open to all ages and abilities.

Two days later, on Saturday, Nov. 28, Coronado MainStreet hosts Shop Small Saturday downtown, and Santa may be out walking the streets. Lamb's Players runs its holiday show, Fargo, North of Normal, from Nov. 20 to Dec. 24. The plot follows four people who all set their sights on the same "dream" property, each hoping to move in by Christmas.

This calendar belongs to nonprofits, booster clubs, and the Chamber. Its biggest events are free and happen outdoors, and through late November they run alongside the resort's season without sharing a night with it.

Four days in December when both calendars share the island

Then, from Dec. 2 to Dec. 5, the two calendars' headline events land on top of each other:

  1. Wednesday, Dec. 2: the Del's Holiday Festival and Skydiving Santa, a free community event on the resort grounds with local school performances, skating, a light show, and fireworks. The school performances take place in the Del's Founders Ballroom.
  2. Friday, Dec. 4: Coronado's Holiday Parade and Tree Lighting on Orange Avenue. The Discover Coronado events listing puts the parade at 6 p.m. and describes the tree at Rotary Plaza as 120 feet tall with 18,175 lights. That same day, Photos with Santa opens in the Del's Garden Patio, on select dates through Dec. 24.
  3. Saturday, Dec. 5: the Coronado Artisans Alley craft fair, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Village Elementary School, 600 6th Street, with the entrance on H Avenue. Proceeds support the Coronado Band & Choir Boosters. The fair brings more than 150 vendors, food, and performances by the Coronado Elementary, Middle, and High School bands and choirs. Over at the Del, Gingerbread House Decorating begins the same day, on select dates through Dec. 27.

Local student performers sit at the center of both calendars. They are in the Del's Founders Ballroom Wednesday night and in the Village Elementary schoolyard Saturday morning. The resort's family programs also start the same weekend the town holds its parade and craft fair. That makes the first weekend of December the busiest stretch of the island's season. It is also the one weekend when the headline events of both calendars fall within a walk from Rotary Plaza to the Del.

After the overlap, the calendars split again

Once Dec. 5 passes, the island turns toward the bay. The Coronado Philharmonia's Holidays in Coronado concert on Saturday, Dec. 12, includes selections from Handel's Messiah, Stravinsky, and holiday favorites, with performances at 6 and 8 p.m. The next evening brings the first of two Sundays for the 55th annual San Diego Bay Parade of Lights, on Dec. 13 and Dec. 20. More than 75 boats decorated to the year's theme pass the bayfront, and Coronado Ferry Landing is one of the best places to watch.

The Del, meanwhile, keeps building toward the end of its season. Elf Deliveries, from Dec. 12 to 24, are only for overnight guests. On Dec. 31, the Laundry hosts the Rockin' New Year's Eve Party, a ticketed night with live music, an open bar, and dancing. The building whose trucks once delivered clean laundry to island homes will close out 2026 as a ticketed resort venue.

The nights to keep open

For a household planning around school, work, and visiting family, the season comes down to a short list:
